Help & FAQ
How can we help?
Setup, sensors, alerts, and the answers we get asked most. If you can't find it here, we're a small shop and a real person will write you back.
Getting started
From the box to your first reading.
What's in the Pakage starter kit?
One PakaHome gateway, one PakaNode field sensor with a canopy frost probe, a solar panel and mounting stake, and the cables to tie it together. The PakaNtrol app is a free download on iOS, Android, and the web.
That's everything you need to start watching your first cold corner — no extra parts, no shopping list.
Do I need to know anything technical to set it up?
No. If you can set up a thermostat or a doorbell camera, you can set up a PakaNode. The app walks you through it soup to nuts: plug in the gateway, pair the node over Bluetooth, point it at your Wi-Fi, and plant the stake. Most folks are watching a reading inside fifteen minutes.
How do I pair my first node?
Open the app, tap Add a node, and hold your phone near the node. It pairs over Bluetooth, then hands its Wi-Fi and gateway settings across. The app shows each step and confirms when the node is heard at the house.
If pairing stalls, stand within about 30 feet of the node and try again — Bluetooth is short-range by design.
Does it need an internet connection or a subscription?
The gateway uses your home Wi-Fi to push readings to your phone, so it needs internet at the house. But there's no subscription, ever — you buy the box once and it works. Your readings are yours, not held hostage behind a monthly bill.
Out of cell range in the field? The app can talk straight to a nearby node over Bluetooth to pull its latest readings.
Nodes & sensors
The hardware out in the rows.
What can one node measure at once?
Up to three things. The onboard environmental sensor reads air temperature, humidity, dew point, pressure and air quality. On top of that, each node has two 3.5 mm probe ports — plug a canopy frost probe, a soil-moisture meter, or a pressure transducer into either one.
Both ports are universal: any of those probes works in either jack, and the node figures out which is which on its own.
How long does the battery last?
On the default five-minute reading cadence and a clear panel, a node runs roughly three to four weeks between solar top-ups — and in practice the panel keeps it topped up year-round in most spots. You can stretch that a long way by slowing the cadence in the node's settings; the app shows a live energy meter and an estimated runtime as you adjust it.
Is the node weatherproof?
Yes. The node is built to live outside through the season — rain, dew, and frost. The environmental sensor breathes through a hydrophobic membrane that lets humidity and pressure through while keeping water and dust out, and it faces down so nothing pools on it.
Where should I put the frost probe?
Down in the canopy, at the height of the fruit or buds you're trying to protect — that's where the cold settles and where the damage happens. The air sensor up on the node tells you the trend; the canopy probe tells you what the crop is actually feeling.
Range & connectivity
How far it reaches, and what happens when it doesn't.
How far will a node reach back to the gateway?
Nodes talk to the gateway over long-range LoRa, not Wi-Fi — so they reach the back forty where Wi-Fi never could. With clear line of sight you can get well over a mile; trees, buildings, and hills shorten that. The app shows each node's signal strength so you can see how solid the link is before you commit to a spot.
What happens if the internet goes out at the house?
The gateway keeps right on listening. It tucks every reading away in local storage and pushes the whole backlog up the moment the connection returns — so you don't lose the night. Those catch-up readings are marked as history and never trigger a false alarm after the fact.
Can I check a node with no signal at all in the field?
Yes. Walk within about 30 feet of a node and the app connects to it directly over Bluetooth — live reading, the last day of history, battery, and GPS lock — no cell service or Wi-Fi needed. We call it "offline — BLE direct."
Does it work outside the US?
Not yet. The v1 hardware is tuned for the US 915 MHz LoRa band only. International bands are on the roadmap, but they're not in this release.
Alerts & notifications
How a freeze warning finds you.
How do I get told when it's about to freeze?
Set your line — say, 34°F — and the moment a reading crosses it, the app sends a push notification and an email. The freeze alert is loud on purpose: it can break through Do Not Disturb so a 2 a.m. frost doesn't sit quiet on your nightstand.
Will it wake me up over and over all night?
No. You get one alarm when a reading first crosses your line, and one reminder an hour later if it's still cold — that's it. Repeat crossings group into a single thread instead of buzzing every five minutes, and when it warms back up the alert quietly flips to green on its own.
Can I set different lines for different nodes?
Yes — every sensor on every node carries its own threshold. Your tender orchard block can warn at 36°F while a hardy field waits for 30°F. Tap into a node, pick the sensor, and drag the line where you want it.
Can other people on the farm get the alerts too?
Yes. Invite anyone to the farm and the readings and alerts are shared across everyone — each person signs in with their own account. See App & account for how sharing works.
App & account
Signing in, sharing, and getting your data out.
How do I sign in?
With your Apple or Google account — no new password to remember. The app is sign-in only; whoever you sign in as is who the farm and its readings belong to.
How do I add my spouse or a farmhand?
In Account → People, send an invite by email and pick a role. Managers can add nodes and set the lines; Viewers see readings and get alerts but can't change anything. Everyone signs in with their own account, and the whole farm shares one set of readings.
Can I export my readings?
Yes. Go to Settings → Data → Export readings, choose which nodes and how far back, and the app builds a real CSV file you can save or share — readings in your chosen units, ready for Excel, Sheets, Numbers, or R. Your data, in a spreadsheet, whenever you want it.
Is the app on both iPhone and Android?
Both, from day one — plus a web version you can open in any browser. Same app, same readings, wherever you are.
Orders & shipping
Pre-orders, shipping, returns.
When does it ship?
The Pakage ships late 2026. Pre-orders are open now, and we'll email you before anything bills or ships — no surprises.
How much is shipping?
Free across the lower 48. The v1 hardware is US-only for now, so that's where we ship.
What's your return and warranty policy?
If a unit shows up dead or quits on you through no fault of your own, we make it right. Reach out through Get in Touch with your order or serial number and we'll sort it. Full written terms go up alongside launch.
How do I pay?
Checkout runs through Shopify, with PayPal welcome alongside the usual cards and Apple Pay. Your card details never touch us. It's a one-time purchase — no subscription rides along.
